This has been a good year for slugs, much to our dismay. All the wet weather is heaven for slugs. They have really gone after my lupines, as well as my hostas and my new ligularias. As I see them out (mainly in evenings) I crush them. I also use iron phosphate slug bait liberally. The two types that I buy (depending on which costs less) are Sluggo and Worry Free. They are more expensive than the other types but not harmful to pets and birds. Slugs eat the bait, then go away to die. It takes a few days for them to die but they stop feeding immediately.
Slug control is another good reason to time your watering in the early morning instead of evening. Morning watering is much better for your plants and lawn as well - less fungus.
